What Is Regenerative Medicine?
Regenerative medicine is a broad field of medicine focused on understanding and supporting the body’s natural repair and biological processes. What Are MSC Stem Cells?
MSC stands for mesenchymal stromal cells, often referred to as mesenchymal stem cells. MSCs are a type of multipotent stromal cell that has been extensively studied in regenerative medicine research. They can be obtained from several sources, including bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord tissue, and placental tissue.
One option is autologous MSC therapy, meaning cells are obtained from the patient’s own body. What Is Wharton’s Jelly?
Wharton’s Jelly is a gelatinous connective tissue found within the umbilical cord. It surrounds and protects the umbilical blood vessels during fetal development. Wharton’s Jelly has become an important source of MSCs for regenerative medicine research because it contains populations of mesenchymal stromal cells.
The appeal of using donated umbilical cord-derived MSCs is partly related to the fact that the cells can be obtained without harvesting tissue from the patient. Why Use Donor MSCs Instead of the Patient’s Own Cells?
Patients sometimes assume that using their own cells must automatically be better. This is not necessarily true. Autologous MSC therapy has an obvious advantage: the cells come from the patient’s own body. However, obtaining those cells generally requires a harvesting procedure.
Depending on the source, this may involve:
- adipose tissue harvesting
- bone marrow aspiration
- additional processing
- additional procedural time
- recovery from the harvesting procedure
There is also an important biological consideration. The characteristics and potency of a patient’s own cells can vary with age, health, metabolic status, and other individual factors. Donor-derived MSCs from younger tissue offer a different starting material. This is one reason umbilical cord and Wharton’s Jelly-derived MSCs have attracted significant interest in regenerative medicine research and therapies. What Are Exosomes?
Exosomes are very different from stem cells, although they are derived from stem cells. An exosome is a type of extracellular vesicle – a tiny membrane-bound structure released by cells. Each MSC has an average of 5,000 exosomes. Exosomes contain biological molecules, including proteins, lipids, messenger RNA, microRNA, and other molecular cargo.
One of the reasons exosomes are so interesting to researchers and for therapeutic applications is that cells can use extracellular vesicles as a form of cell-to-cell communication. In simplified terms, you can think of exosomes as microscopic biological “messengers.” They don’t contain an intact stem cell. Instead, they carry molecular signals that influence how other cells respond. This distinction is extremely important:
MSC therapy involves cells. Exosome therapy involves cell-derived extracellular vesicles.
MSC Stem Cells vs. Exosomes
The easiest way to understand the difference is to think about what is actually being administered.
MSC therapy
MSC therapy involves living mesenchymal stromal cells. Researchers have studied MSCs for their ability to interact with surrounding tissues and influence the local biological environment through multiple mechanisms.
Exosome therapy
Exosome therapy involves extracellular vesicles produced by stem cells. These vesicles can carry biological signaling molecules and are being investigated and used by early adopters for their potential role in cell-to-cell communication and regenerative processes.
What Is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Unlike donor-derived MSC therapy and exosome therapy, PRP is typically autologous, meaning it comes from the patient’s own blood. To obtain it, a small amount of blood is collected and processed to concentrate platelets and plasma. Platelets are best known for their role in blood clotting, but they also contain numerous proteins and growth factors involved in tissue repair and healing processes.
During a PRP procedure, the concentrated platelet-rich portion of the blood is prepared and then injected into the treatment area. PRP has been studied extensively in areas such as sports medicine, orthopedics, tendinopathy, and musculoskeletal conditions. The evidence varies depending on the specific condition and treatment protocol, so PRP should not be thought of as a universal treatment for every injury or disease.
MSC Stem Cells vs. PRP
One of the biggest differences between MSCs and PRP is what they contain. PRP is derived from your own blood and contains concentrated platelets and plasma components. MSC therapy involves mesenchymal stromal cells derived from the patient or the Wharton’s Jelly inside donated placentas and umbilical cords. This means the biological mechanisms being investigated are different.

What Are MSC Stem Cell Injections Used For?
The potential applications of MSC-based regenerative medicine are broad, but it is important to distinguish research interest from proven medical indications. At Balanced Medical Solutions, our localized MSC-based protocols include several areas.
Knee and Joint Injections
One of the most widely discussed applications of MSC therapy is joint-related regenerative medicine, particularly the knee. Researchers have conducted numerous clinical trials evaluating MSC-based injections for knee osteoarthritis and other joint conditions.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials involving more than 1,000 participants found that advanced MSC therapy showed reductions in pain compared with viscosupplementation at 12 months. Another systematic review of randomized controlled trials published in 2025 found that many studies reported improvements with stromal cell-based injections compared with non-operative treatments. In other words, the research is promising, but it is still evolving.

Vitti-Pure + MSC Stem Cells: A Regenerative Medicine Combination
Vitti-Pure is a proprietary regenerative wellness formulation designed to complement cellular-based therapies by providing additional biological support to the treatment environment. Why Exosomes May Be Particularly Well-Suited for Systemic IV Therapy
For systemic intravenous therapy, exosomes offer several potential advantages over administering whole MSCs directly into the bloodstream. Exosomes are extremely small, cell-free extracellular vesicles that can travel through the circulation and deliver biologically active signaling molecules to distant tissues. Their nanoscale size and natural cellular-communication properties may allow them to cross biological barriers that are difficult for many therapies to reach, including the blood-brain barrier. Research has demonstrated that exosomes can cross or interact with the blood-brain barrier, creating exciting possibilities for supporting cellular communication and repair mechanisms in the brain and nervous system.
Similarly, researchers are investigating exosomes for potential applications in retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, because extracellular vesicles may interact with the blood-retinal barrier and influence inflammation, cellular signaling, and tissue-protective pathways. Another important distinction is the concentration delivered: at Balanced Medical Solutions, a standard Exosome IV contains at least 1.7 trillion exosomes, providing a concentrated source of extracellular vesicles and their associated signaling cargo throughout the body.
Because exosomes are cell-free, they also avoid some of the theoretical concerns associated with introducing large numbers of living MSCs intravenously, including cellular interactions within the pulmonary microcirculation and coagulation pathways. What Are PRP Injections Used For?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections use a concentrated preparation of platelets derived from the patient’s own blood. Because platelets naturally contain growth factors involved in tissue repair and cellular signaling, PRP has been used in a variety of regenerative applications, including painful joints, soft-tissue injuries, hair and scalp treatments, and sexual wellness. PRP can be injected directly into areas where additional regenerative signaling is desired, making it a versatile treatment option. At Balanced Medical Solutions, however, our experience has led us to favor MSC stem cell injections combined with Vitti-Pure over PRP alone for many joint and scalp applications. We believe this combination provides a more comprehensive regenerative approach for these areas, while we use PRP almost exclusively for our specialized sexual wellness treatments, where the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma can be precisely administered to targeted tissues.
PRP for Sexual Wellness

Are Stem Cells, Exosomes, and PRP FDA Approved?

The short answer is that “FDA-regulated,” “FDA-cleared,” and “FDA-approved for a specific medical treatment” are not the same thing. The FDA regulates products, biological materials, and medical devices used in regenerative medicine, but that does not mean that every stem cell, exosome, or PRP treatment offered by a clinic is FDA-approved for the condition being treated. At current time, the FDA only regulates the way biological materials such as stem cells and exosomes are harvested, stored, treated, and transported.
PRP is somewhat different. PRP is prepared from a patient’s own blood, and the FDA has cleared certain devices for the preparation of autologous PRP for specific labeled uses. However, an FDA-cleared PRP preparation device should not be confused with FDA approval of PRP injections for every condition or treatment protocol in which PRP may be used. The specific device clearance and its intended use matter.
