Oxytocin is sometimes referred to as the “love hormone” or “love drug” for its roles in sexual bonding, parenting, and other social behaviors. Oxytocin is a peptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus, a part of the brain. Women usually have higher levels than men.  It is released during sex, childbirth, and lactation to aid in reproductive functions.  In men and women, it is linked strongly to orgasm and sexual behavior, as well as in bonding, such as between a mother and newborn.

In recent years, scientific studies of the effects of oxytocin on the brain suggest its role goes well beyond childbirth and lactation. Studies in laboratory animals and humans suggest that the “love hormone” plays an important role in the establishment of social relationships and behaviors, such as caregiving and can help enhance positive feelings and social skills.

In both men and women, it can increase libido and orgasms and reduce stress and anxiety. It can also help mitigate cravings and appetite for those also looking to reduce their calorie consumption. For men, taking oxytocin before or during sex has been shown to increase overall sexual satisfaction in a number of different parameters, such as the enhancement of the sensation of orgasm.

How is oxytocin administered?

Oxytocin may be administered either as an injection or an intranasal spray.  It may also be applied as a cream. The nasal spray is what is most recommended because this method allows for rapid onset, with plasma oxytocin levels rising within 20 minutes, although most people feel effects immediately.

Who can take oxytocin?

If you are healthy and not pregnant or lactating, or do not have a known allergy to oxytocin, you should be able to take it safely under the guidance of a supervision physician. However, make sure to discuss with your physician any other medications you are taking or any allergies or chronic health conditions that you may have.
